Obituary: Sara Frances Ruehl

Sara Frances Ruehl was born Oct. 10, 1918. She passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2020 at the age of 101 years and 10 months. A memorial graveside service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the Cullman City Cemetery.

Sara was preceded in death by her husband Karl Emil Ruehl; her parents Edward L. Duke, Sr. and Sallie C. Duke; her brother Edward “Buddy” Duke; and her sister-in-law Dorothy Reid Duke.

Sara is survived by a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

She was a superb basketball player while attending Cullman High School. Her height was definitely an advantage.

Throughout the years Sara excelled in bowling and was in a league for several years. They participated in several local, state and regional competitions.

Sara enjoyed playing canasta with friends at The Donald E. Green Center in Cullman. She was still playing canasta with the group at the age of 101.

She was a perfectionist at crochet and knitting projects for friends, family and for the public.

The Braves Baseball Team was a special interest of Sara’s. She has seen the Braves play in person, but decided she could see more via television. She knew the players’ names, strengths and weaknesses.

Some of Sara’s vacations included Germany, Ireland, Alaska, and Hawaii, as well as numerous short trips. Travel was always a learning experience as well as an enjoyment.

She continually expanded her vocabulary by working crossword puzzles in two different newspapers every day.

Sara worked various places in Cullman before retiring from Americold.
