CULLMAN, Ala. – Mustard Seed Nursery excitedly announced April 22, 2020 its new building is moving closer to completion.

The Tribune spoke with owner Sandy Walker to learn more on the move and how the business has fared recently.

“We had an electrical fire in the wall last May that caused the building to burn. I would say the new building is more of a new chapter (of the business),” she said. “I loved the old house and hated that we couldn’t save it.”

Walker said she has high hopes for the new building.

“We hope it will increase business,” she said. “We will have more to offer year-round: Bird seed, dog treats, garden accents and more. The Sunflour Bakery will be coming back as well.”

Walker is hopeful both businesses will be in the new building by the first of June.

She shared a brief history of her business, saying, “In November 1999 I started leasing Big Cedars Nursery. I was there for 10 years. In July of 2009 I purchased the property on County Road 222 and built greenhouses and areas for the shrubs. In 2016 the bakery (Sunflour Bakery) and I shared the building. They grew and expanded their menu and wanted to lease the whole building so I moved in a building out back. I’m very excited to be moving back upfront and into a larger building. I hope to be in by the first of June and fingers crossed the bakery also!”

So how has business has been impacted by the pandemic?

“We have had the busiest spring in the 20 years I’ve been in business,” smiled Walker. “I feel as though people had more time to get out in their yards and get them looking how they wanted them; they have had more time to beautify their yards and add more color with flowers. With us being mostly out in the open, I feel as though they felt safer shopping with us. We have held off on moving into the new building because of the pandemic just so the customers would feel a little bit more at ease being in the open.”
