Vinemont 54 – St. Bernard 35 (varsity girls)

Vinemont got off to a strong start offensively behind Sadie Stanley and Bailey Preiss, who scored 15 of the Lady Eagles’ 21 points in the first period. St. Bernard had five players find the scoring column in the quarter, but Vinemont took a 21-10 lead into the second period.

The second quarter was a defensive one as a combined 12 points were scored in the period, but the Lady Eagles went into the half up 25-17. Vinemont continued its defensive intensity in the third quarter and held the Lady Saints to just four points, pushing the lead to 36-21 after three.

The offense started to come alive for both teams in the final period and the Lady Saints looked to chip away at the Lady Eagle lead, but the deficit was just too much for them to overcome and Vinemont wound up pulling away to win by a comfortable margin, 54-35.

Stanley led the Lady Eagles (7-20) with 21 points. Madysen Hacker added 11 points, Preiss ended up with nine and Jessica Ortiz finished with five. For St. Bernard (8-12), Emma Tafazoli led the way with 21 points, Claire Sanders added six and Macy Whaley and Claudia Fallin each ended up with four.

St. Bernard 42 – Vinemont 41 (varsity boys)

Vinemont held a 6-5 lead early in the first period and later stretched it to 15-7 after back to back threes by Curtis Kennedy and Katch Johnson late in the quarter. A three by St. Bernard’s Eli Loyd made it a 17-11 game, but a layup by Jordan Hall gave Vinemont a 19-13 lead after one.

Both offenses struggled to score for most of the second period and a Tanner Brown layup with 2:12 remaining in the first half gave the Eagles a 21-13 lead. A Johnson three-pointer stretched their lead to 26-15. A John Christian Rose layup cut the Saints deficit to nine at the half.

Layups by Clay Rogers and Johnson pushed the Vinemont lead to 30-19 midway through the third period, but St. Bernard went on a huge run to get back in the game. Alex Shoaff hit a pair of threes during the run, Rose converted an and-one play and Caleb Guthery tied the game at 30 on a layup. Both teams went into the final period tied up at 32.

Both teams traded the lead early in the fourth quarter and another Shoaff three gave the Saints a 38-37 lead. Guthery pushed the St. Bernard lead to three, but a Johnson trey tied the game at 40 more than midway through the quarter. Another Guthery basket gave the Saints a 42-40 lead with less than three minutes to go in the game. Kennedy later added a free throw to make it 42-41. After several huge defensive stops by both teams, Vinemont got the ball with .8 seconds remaining with a chance to win the game, but Johnson’s half-court heave fell just short and the Saints held on to win 42-41.
