CULLMAN COUNTY TOURNAMENT: (3) Cold Springs rolls past (6) Vinemont 55-31 to advance to semifinal round

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Tuesday’s nightcap from the Cullman County Basketball Tournament featured a battle of the Eagles as Vinemont and Cold Springs hit the floor to battle for a spot in Friday’s semifinal games.

An Adam Hill basket gave Cold Springs an early 3-0 lead over Vinemont and Tanner Kilgo scored down low to make it 5-1 just two minutes into the opening quarter. A pair of Seth Williams free throws stretched the lead to 7-1 midway through the first and Williams later added a three-pointer to make it a 10-1 game with just over two minutes to play in the first. A Will Rhodes basket made it a 7-point game with less than a minute to play in the period and Vinemont trailed 10-3 at the start of the second.

Kilgo scored to make it 12-3 at the start of the second quarter and he added another basket later in the period to give Cold Springs a 14-5 lead. Brody Peppers drilled a three from the left wing to extend the lead to 12 midway through the period and a Katch Johnson floater made it a 19-7 game with just under three minutes to play in the half. Collin Teichmiller knocked down a shot to cut the lead to 10 and a Clay Rogers basket made it 19-11. A Tanner Brown free throw held the Cold Springs lead to 20-12 with less than a minute remaining in the half but a two more free throws from Williams built the lead back up 23-13 with 19 seconds on the clock. Kilgo buried a turnaround jumper at the buzzer and Cold Springs led the way 25-13 at the break.

A Logan Rice bucket gave Cold Springs a 30-15 lead early in the third quarter and he added a three from the left wing to make it 33-17 at the five-minute mark of the period. A Katch Johnson steal and basket trimmed the lead to 14 but an and-one from Hill put Cold Springs on top 36-19 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Peppers banked in a three-pointer from the right wing to make it 41-19 late in the third and Hill pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back in the basket to give Cold Springs a 45-23 lead going into the final frame.

A Connor Handley basket cut the lead to 45-25 midway through the fourth quarter, but Hill responded with another and-one play at the other end that stretched the lead back to 28. A jumper from Johnson made it 50-28 with just over three minutes to play but after another basket by Hill gave Cold Springs a 52-29 lead with less than two minutes to play, the Eagles in blue pulled away to win it 55-31, earning a spot in Friday night’s semifinal showdown against either (2) West Point or (7) Holly Pond.

Hill led the way for Cold Springs with 16 points in the win, followed by Kilgo with 11, Peppers and Williams each posted eight and Rice finished with six. Johnson led Vinemont with 10 points in the loss. Rhodes finished with six, Handley added five and Rogers scored four.

Cold Springs will face the winner of tomorrow’s Warriors and Broncos matchup Friday night at 7:30.
