CULLMAN, Ala. – An elderly man was the victim of a hit and run Sunday evening on the southwest side of the city of Cullman. Police are searching for the vehicle involved. The victim, Freddie Shelton, born in 1939, suffered a broken left leg, head injuries and road rash to his arms and body, according to Cullman Police Traffic Homicide Investigator Jonathan England, who is investigating the incident. England said he has visited Shelton, but that Shelton is not yet able to communicate.

The hit and run occurred at Seventh Street Southwest and Main Avenue. CPD Lt. Jeff Warnke said Shelton was struck near Seventh Street Baptist Church between 8-8:30 p.m.

“The patrol officer came up on him laying in the street about the same time dispatch got a call on it,” said Warnke.

Shelton was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

“He was walking across Main Avenue from the church,” said England, who stated the driver who hit Shelton and left the scene will be facing felony hit and run charges.

The CPD recovered a right side view mirror at the scene.

“We are investigating forensically to find out what type of vehicle that belongs to,” Warnke said, “and possibly try to get a serial number.”

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the CPD at 256-734-1434.
