PREP BASKETBALL:Chaney’s record-setting night leads Holly Pond past Vinemont 93-83, Lady Broncos handle Lady Eagles 55-31

HOLLY POND, Ala. – Holly Pond and Vinemont faced off against each other in a pair of area matchups as both teams looked to get back on track after getting swept by Oneonta and Hanceville, respectively. Holly Pond wound up taking both games from Vinemont. The Lady Broncos rolled past the Lady Eagles, 55-31, while the Broncos outscored the Eagles 93-83 thanks in no small part to a school record 48 points from Kyler Chaney. Holly Pond will travel to take on New Hope Friday in a pair of huge area games while Vinemont will host Falkville Friday.

Holly Pond 55 – Vinemont 31 (varsity girls)

It was a tight first half between these two teams but after making some adjustments at the halftime break, the Lady Broncos were able to control of the game and pull away to beat Vinemont in the second half.

Kaylee Stallings led the way for Holly Pond with 19 points in the win. Elizabeth Miller posted nine, Sarah Finley finished with eight and Quincey Marks and Kennedy Twilley each finished with five. Madysen Hacker led the Lady Eagles with eight points in the loss, followed by Bailey Preiss and Hailee Moore with six, Abby Young with five and Kanasta Daniel with four.

Holly Pond 93 – Vinemont 83 (varsity boys)

The first quarter saw Holly Pond spread the ball around as five different players found the scoring column and Vinemont’s Katch Johnson scored seven of his team’s points in the opening period, but the Broncos wound up taking a 22-15 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the second quarter. Vinemont had six different players find the scoring column, but Chaney had a huge quarter as he finished with 11 points. Parker Sellers drilled a pair from deep and Jordan Allbright added one from long range as well as the Broncos went into the half leading the way 49-40.

Vinemont looked to chip away at the deficit and take the lead in the third period, but Holly Pond kept them at an arm’s length as they went into the final period with a 67-58 advantage. A Chaney layup pushed the Bronco lead to double-digits at 69-58, but Vinemont’s Tanner Brown converted a three-point play to make it 69-61. Later in the period, five straight points from Collin Teichmiller, including a three-point play of his own, made it a 70-66 game with 4:57 remaining in the contest.

Shannon Kitchens quickly drilled a three for Holly Pond and Chaney added yet another layup to push the lead back to nine at 75-66. A Curtis Kennedy trey cut the Vinemont deficit to 79-72, but Chaney completely took over the game after that, attacking the basket at will as he scored 12 of his team’s 14 points the rest of the way and hit the final layup of the game to finish with 48 points, a new school record, as the Broncos pulled away to win a huge game at home 93-83.

Sellers added 15 points for Holly Pond (6-13, 3-3). Allbright ended up with 10 points, Jayden Perkins added six points, Levi Boatright ended up with four points, Jaxon Olinger and Kitchens each finished with three and Casey Brown and Landon Rowell each chipped in with two.

For Vinemont (8-15, 2-4), Kennedy finished with 23 points. Johnson added 21 points, Jordan Hall ended up with 14 points, Will Rhodes finished with eight points, Brown added seven points, Teichmiller ended up with five points, Colby Miller added three and Teague Whatley chipped in with two.
