PREP BASKETBALL: Bearcats, Lady Bearcats knock off Hanceville at home; Friday scoring recap

CULLMAN, Ala. – After splitting a pair of matchups at Gardendale Thursday night, Cullman returned home Friday to host the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs of Hanceville. The Lady Bearcats fell behind early against Hanceville but rallied to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 61-50 and in the boys’ game, the Bearcats pulled away to topple the Bulldogs 67-50. Both the Lady Bearcats and Lady Bulldogs will be competing at this year’s Encore Classic in Hartselle Saturday, the Bearcats will take on Belgreen at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum Tuesday morning and the Bulldogs will be hosting this year’s Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament starting Tuesday.

Cullman 61 – Hanceville 50 (varsity girls)

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-5 lead over Cullman early in the first quarter and managed to stay in front for almost the entire opening half. Hanceville led the way 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and Kelly Pickett sliced her way through multiple defenders and keep the Lady Bulldogs in front 16-14 early in the second.

Jaden Winfrey knocked down a three to tie the game at 17 but Savannah McAnnally answered with a three on the other end to put Hanceville back on top 20-17. A triple from Pickett late in the second quarter gave the Lady Bulldogs a 24-21 lead and they carried a 26-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Bearcats came out swinging in the third tying the game at 28 before a going on a 9-2 run and taking a 37-30 lead midway through the quarter. A pair of free throws and a three-pointer by AK Eastman put Cullman on top 42-33 going into the final frame and by then the lead was too much for Hanceville to overcome and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away to win it 61-50.

Eastman led Cullman with 19 points in the win followed by Regan Quattlebaum with 15, Alexandria Barker with 14 and Winfrey with six. Pickett led all scorers with 26 points in the loss and Cassidy Campbell added 13 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Cullman 67 – Hanceville 50 (varsity boys)

The Bearcats led the way 6-3 early on in this one and stretched that lead to 15-3 by the midway point of the first quarter. A three from Cayden Graham gave Cullman a 24-9 lead going into the second quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to chip away before the half.

A Tyson Bellmon three made it a 32-20 game midway through the second and he kept it going with another deep three-point basket that trimmed the lead to 34-27 later in the quarter. Bellmon drilled his third triple of the quarter with just 12 seconds in the half to cut the lead down to 36-30 at the break.

The Bearcats kept the Bulldogs at arm’s length for most of the second half, taking a 50-34 lead midway through the third and carrying a 53-42 advantage into the final frame. Cullman maintained a 10-point lead midway through the fourth before pulling away to take the game 67-50.

Tucker Gambrill lead the Bearcats with 24 points in the win, followed by Max Gambrill with 11, Kaleb Heatherly with 10 and Jase Goolsby with seven. Bellmon led the Bulldogs with 14 points, followed by Raiden Morgan and Zach Campbell who each posted eight points and Brodie Malcom and Izayah Glenon who both added six.
