GOOD HOPE, Ala. – A little history was made at Good Hope High School Saturday morning as middle school, junior varsity and varsity cheer squads from across the county came together for the inaugural Cullman County Cheer Competition. This year’s field consisted of middle school teams from Good Hope, Cold Springs and Fairview, a junior varsity unit from Good Hope and varsity squads from Holly Pond, Vinemont, Good Hope, West Point, Cold Springs and Hanceville.

It was a big day for the Raiders as the varsity team took home wins in the traditional and gameday competitions while the junior varsity squad captured crowns in the traditional and gameday divisions as well. Fairview middle school also went home with some hardware after winning the gameday competition in the middle school division.

Good Hope Cheer Coach Sydney Chappell was proud of how all her teams competed but was more excited to see this event finally come to fruition in Cullman County.

“This is a dream come true for me. It’s something that I’ve been looking to have for a long time and so just to be able to host it was awesome for us,” Chappell said. “So, we want to thank Dr. (Shane) Barnette for supporting this idea. My girls have worked so hard since March getting ready for competition season, so this kicks us off for the rest of winter.”

The Raiders were the only varsity team to compete in the traditional division, so Chappell was excited to have the gameday competition as part of the event as well. That gives every squad across the county a chance to come and participate and Chappell hopes that will just help this event grow each year.

“The awesome thing about the gameday competition is that its what cheerleaders already do every week. So, we hope that it’ll just boost the competition and how hard cheerleaders work to perfect their performances,” Chappell said. “I really think across the county its just going to boost the sport more than it already has been and we’re looking forward to this going on for years and years to come.”
