BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Both the Addison Lady Bulldogs and Fairview Lady Aggies were at the Birmingham Crossplex Wednesday for this year’s AHSAA State Volleyball Tournament after securing spots in the North Super Regional last week. Fairview defeated DAR and Wilson to advance as the third seed and Addison swept its way to a North Super Regional title to claim the first seed at the state tournament. (50-18) Fairview got things started at 12:30 with a match against the second seed, Providence Christian and (43-14) Addison hit the floor at 2:00 to face the fourth-seeded Ariton Purple Cats.

Providence Christian 3 – Fairview 0 (11-25, 16-25, 18-25) (Quarterfinals)

The Lady Aggies were able to cut it down to 18-12 at one point but couldn’t keep pace with the Lady Eagles and fell in the second set 25-16.

Fairview fell behind early in the third set, trailing Providence Christian 9-2 at one point but rallied to trim the lead to 9-6 before later tying the set at 14. The Lady Eagles pulled ahead 18-14 after that and despite cutting the lead to 22-18 late in the set, Providence Christian held on to win it 25-18, eliminating the Lady Aggies and advancing to the semifinal round.

The loss brings the 2019 season to an end for Fairview and the Lady Aggies finished with a stellar, 50-19 record.

Addison 3 – Ariton 0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-12) (Quarterfinals)

The Lady Bulldogs stretched the lead to 13-6 before pulling ahead for a 17-8 advantage and held off Ariton to take the first set 25-12.

Addison quickly built a 7-1 lead in the second set that grew to 13-1 before Ariton could trim the lead to 15-5 midway through the set. The Lady Bulldogs moved in front 20-9 before putting the Lady Purple Cats away in the second set 25-12.

Another fast start for Addison put Ariton down 7-2 early and the Lady Bulldogs piled on to make it 16-7 as the set progressed. Addison moved ahead 20-8 at one point before pulling away to take the third set 25-12 and sweeping Ariton to advance to the semifinals.

Addison 3 – Cedar Bluff 0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-21) (Semifinals)

Addison got back on the floor late Wednesday afternoon after knocking off Ariton in the quarterfinal round and swept through the semifinals against Cedar Bluff. The Lady Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the first set, taking an early 9-3 lead that they extended to 13-3. It was the Lady Tigers that got off to a fast start in the second set, getting ahead of Addison 4-1 but the Lady Bulldogs were able to quickly trim that lead to 6-5 before pulling ahead to take a 12-9 lead. Addison held a 17-13 lead midway through the set before ending things with an 8-5 scoring run to take the second set.

Cedar Bluff gave the Lady Bulldogs a little trouble in the third set. Despite jumping out to a 7-0 lead that became an 18-10 lead late in the set, the Lady Tigers fought their way back into the match and cut the lead all the way down to 23-21 at one point. Unfortunately for Tigers fans, Addison was too much to overcome and the Lady Bulldogs held on to win it 25-21 and complete the sweep to advance to the state finals.

The Lady Bulldogs will be gunning for their seventh straight state title when they arrive at Bill Harris Arena tomorrow to take on the winner of Sand Rock and G.W. Long.
