CULLMAN, Ala. – Cotton, chickens and monarch butterflies were the hot scoop Friday morning at the North Alabama Agriplex, where one of its programs, the Little Farmers preschool program, got together for its monthly meeting. For the month of October, the Little Farmers learned all about cotton.
North Alabama Agriplex Director Rachel Dawsey shared what the Little Farmers program is about, saying, “It’s a class for our smallest farmers. This program is geared for children ages 3-4 with a parent. The kids love to play; we offer sensory bins for them to feel what we’re learning about while they also get to play!”
After learning where cotton comes from, the Little Farmers ventured across the street from the Agriplex and got to pick cotton themselves. They also had the chance to meet the Agriplex’s hens and roosters and watch as Dawsey released monarchs.
The Little Farmers explore a different topic in the world of agriculture through hands-on activities each month. Dawsey noted the programs usually last from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Registration is required, and class fees are $5 per child. To register, visit www.agriplex.org.
Next month, the Little Farmers will meet Nov. 8 at 10 a.m., and the topic will be “The Green Tractor,” which will entail the history of John Deere and his tractor.
