CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission Tuesday morning announced the Cullman County Sanitation Department will begin using automated trucks next year.

The new program will consist of 11 automated trucks, two front loaders and 23,400 95-gallon garbage carts for customers.

The commission hopes the program, which has an estimated cost of $5.2 million, will begin in summer 2020.

The commission said it believes the cost will be offset by the reduction of insurance and workman’s compensation claims, as well as the surplussing of the current sanitation trucks.

It also said no current sanitation workers will be replaced.
