CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman has a new store that specializes in cannabidiol, or, as it’s more commonly known, CBD.

Your CBD Store’s Cullman franchise owner is Denise Burnette, who talked with The Tribune about what motivated her to open the business.

“My mother has dementia and she has a lot of other ailments and a lot of people told me to give her CBD,” said Burnette. “We had tried a couple of different brands and I wasn’t seeing any results. I came across one of these stores (Your CBD Store) in Decatur and I went in and they told me the difference between this brand and probably what I’m getting from everybody else, so I bought it. It has made a tremendous amount of difference as far as her anxiety, her depression and her sleep. She was on painkillers for many, many years, and she doesn’t do any kind of painkillers anymore. Then I found it was a franchise and then I thought, ‘Everybody needs this.’”

Your CBD Store claims: “Our CBD Store products are made using only the highest quality, organically grown hemp from Colorado which has been certified by that state’s Department of Agriculture. This phytocannabinoid rich (PCR) hemp has a naturally high CBD level, and an abundance of other beneficial cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC), as well as flavonoids, terpenes, and essential amino acids. We use a CO2 extraction process, which eliminates the need for chemical solvents and produces a high-quality, full-spectrum CBD. For our zero-THC products, the CBD is processed again to remove all traces of THC.”

Burnette said she believes her store’s products definitely help her customers.

“I see it every day. Every day,” she said. “I first saw it with my mother, that’s the person I saw it with. It took the product that she needed; it took an organic product. Just that relief and the anxiety is not that bad, is a change. Has it cured her? No. Has it helped her? Yes.”

Having an open mind is a key component in first trying CBD, said Burnette.

“That’s all it is, it’s that open mind, the willingness to even try it. Is it going to work for everybody? Probably not. There’s no one quick fix for everybody. But do I feel like it would help a lot of people? Yes, because I’ve seen it. We just want to make people feel better,” she said.

What exactly is CBD?

Cannabidiol, called CBD, CBD oil or hemp oil, is a chemical extracted from the flowers and buds of the hemp plant, a variety of cannabis sativa (marijuana is also a variety), has been both touted as a medical miracle and condemned as nothing more than “liquid pot.”

So why Cullman?

Burnette, from Hartselle, shared, “Cullman is kind of a town like Hartselle; to me it’s like it’s always kind of left out. Nobody had opened one here, there wasn’t even a lot of CBD at all here. The demographics were where they needed to be as far as who benefits the most out of these products. I just felt like Cullman would be a better playing field for me.”

CBD and marijuana are not the same, said Burnette.

“This is the health without the high. This is the natural alternative for ailments, but without the high. This will not get you high. You cannot get addicted, you cannot overdose, you can’t get high.”

Your CBD Store only carries the brand SunMed, which is organic, from Florida.

According to Harvard Medical School’s Harvard Health Publishing contributing editor Peter Grinspoon, M.D., CBD “is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. While CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself it does not cause a high.”

What can CBD treat?

Burnette said, “When you stress your body and all this, and you get all that inflammation and that tension in your body, your body doesn’t feel good, it aches. But when you give it to me, when you give it the CBD that is needed to control the inflammation in your body, you feel better. I might be saying it wrong because we have the FDA stuff and you can’t say it cures and can’t say it helps and can’t say it prevents, and I know we can’t say all that, but me as a person being in here, I literally have seen it change people’s lives. Literally.”

From medical studies, results have shown assuring results for CBD in treating:

  • chronic pain and inflammation
  • nicotine or opioid addiction, by reducing withdrawal symptoms
  • psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia
  • cancer, by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells
  • anxiety disorders, including PTSD
  • type one diabetes, by decreasing inflammation in the pancreas
  • acne, by lowering the skin’s production of sebum
  • Alzheimer’s Disease, by slowing the progress of the illness
  • seizures, especially those caused by epilepsy

“There’s a guy that comes in here that buys the vapes, and the first time he came in here he said, ‘I just wanted to see if it works. I’m just going to try it to see if it works.’ And he came back in, and now he buys them three at a time. I’m going to tell you what he told me after the first time he came in, he said, ‘I used to have panic attacks driving. They would be so bad I would have to pull over.’ It was from traffic and it was just the noise, come to find out he has PTSD, he was in the military. He said, ‘Now, if I feel it coming, I just pull on that vape pen, it’s gone and I continue to drive. It doesn’t affect my life anymore,’” shared Burnette.

She shared another story: “I got another customer, her husband came in here, he was looking for something for her and then she came in, I guess he was taking too long, but she came in and she told me, ‘I’m sorry, I have to sit down, I can’t stand long.’ And she went through this stuff about something with her bones and how her legs and stuff were, they’d turn blue. They bought the CBD stuff, and the second time they were in here, which you’ll see my grandbaby’s here 99% of the time and that’s his little spot over there (a corner in the store where he plays). The next time they were in here, she didn’t sit down the whole time she was in here. She danced around and she played with the baby. She was a totally different person. And she went, ‘This stuff has changed my life. I couldn’t stand up and cook dinner for my husband.’ So, when you see that, it makes you think ‘How can I not say that this is changing people’s lives?’”

Said Burnette, “These are people that live in Cullman, these are stories of people that are coming right in here.”
