CULLMAN, Ala. – This Friday, July 19, the Notre Dame Children’s Liturgical Choir from the University of Notre Dame’s Sacred Music Academy will sing at Mass and Vespers in the Abbey Church of St. Bernard Abbey.  Mass begins at 5 p.m. and is followed by Vespers at about 5:35 p.m., ending at roughly 6 p.m.  The choir will perform one piece prior to Mass, so arrival by 4:45 p.m. is recommended.

The choir’s contribution to the worship event will include:

  • Before Mass: “Regina Coeli,” Rheinberger
  • During the Offertory: “A Grateful Heart,” Mary Plumstead
  • During Holy Communion: “Ave Verum Corpus,” Elgar/ “Panis Angelicus,” Franck – as time allows
  • Between Mass and Vespers: “Phos Hilaron,” Daniel Justin
  • At Vespers: “Magnificat” setting by Daniel Justin
  • Immediately after Vespers – “Ave Maris Stella,” Rheinberger

Fr. Joel Martin said, “We’re so happy to receive such a renowned choir joining the monks of the Abbey in praise of God.  All are invited to attend.”

This is a worship service, so admission is free.  Attendees may make a donation for the choir if they wish.

The Notre Dame Sacred Music Academy’s website provides this description of the Notre Dame Children’s Choir program:

The Notre Dame Children’s Choir (NDCC) is an ecumenical ensemble for Christian sacred music open to singers from birth to age 17. In addition to learning healthy vocal technique, choristers practice the fundamentals of reading and expressing music. Each season, the NDCC hosts a festival of sacred children’s choirs, collaborates with important conductors and composers, participates in annual musical retreats, regional tours, and performs at a variety of churches. NDCC is free to all choristers. Our mission is to educate the whole singer through music, spirituality, and community.

Initiated in the fall of 2013 with a twenty-voice choir, the NDCC has grown into a five choir program of over 120 singers. The program regularly commissions new works of sacred music and invites guest directors to lead our singers. It is our belief that young singers should be at the center of every church or community choral program.

The Liturgical Choir, led by Artistic Director Dr. Mark Doerries, assistant professor in the practice of conducting at the University of Notre Dame, and accompanied by Trevis Young, campus minister for liturgy and music at Saint Mary’s College, regularly sings for weekly Mass and Vespers at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame and Church Of Our Lady of Loretto at Saint Mary’s College.
