AREA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENTS: Lady Raiders pull away late from Fairview, Monday scoring wrap-up

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Area Tournaments are underway for softball teams across the state and Good Hope, Fairview, West Point, Vinemont and Holly Pond got theirs started on Monday. The Lady Raiders topped Fairview 5-1 to move to the next stage of the winner’s bracket and the Lady Aggies were eliminated in the loser’s bracket by Oneonta. West Point knocked off Guntersville 17-7 with an offensive barrage but fell in a close game to Brewer in round two. Holly Pond knocked off Vinemont 13-6 in round one and will face New Hope in round two on Tuesday while the Lady Eagles prepare to take on Brindlee Mountain in the loser’s bracket.

Good Hope 5 – Fairview 1 (4A Area 12)

After three scoreless innings between Good Hope and Fairview, the Lady Raiders broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth with an Angelina Flanagan RBI single. They added to their lead in the bottom half of the fifth when Kailee Shikle scored on an error and an RBI single from Jacqueline Hays made it 3-0.

Hays came around to score on a sacrifice bunt from Bailey Swann to make it 4-0 and an RBI single from Sidnie English gave Good Hope a 5-0 advantage going into the sixth. A solo homerun from Katie Ball got Fairview on the board in the top of the seventh but it was all the offense the Lady Aggies could muster, and the Lady Raiders held on to win it 5-1.

English tossed a complete game for Good Hope and allowed just one run on three hits and striking out nine batters in the win. Morgan Goodwin finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the Lady Raiders and Hays (two hits), Swann, Flanagan (one hit) and English each drove in a run. Katie Ball (one HR), Allyson Wooten and Rebekah Deblanc collected the only this of the game for Fairview.

Good Hope will advance in the winners bracket to take on Ashville Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Oneonta 10 – Fairview 6 (4A Area 12)

 The Lady Aggies were tied at 2 with Oneonta after three innings but the Lady Redskins scored a run in the fourth and fifth to take the lead before tacking on six runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from Fairview. The Lady Aggies scored four in the final frame to cut into the lead but couldn’t come all the way back and fell 10-6.

Devan Fulmer (one hit) and Anna Scott each collected a pair of RBIs for Fairview and Kennedy Johnson drove in a run as well.

West Point 17 – Guntersville 7 (5A Area 14)

The Lady Warriors found themselves down 7-4 after four innings against Guntersville but plated 10 runs in the top of the fifth to pull away with a 17-7 win in round one. Gracie Abbott (three hits), Molly Pendley and Makayla Brown each racked up four RBIs for West Point in the win.

Pendley (grand slam) and Carlie Wilkins (two hits) each collected a homerun and Brown (two hits) finished the game with two shots over the fence. Sydney Sellers posted a pair of hits for the Lady Warriors as well.

Brewer 5 – West Point 4 (5A Area 14)

After the Lady Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, Brewer plated a run in the second and four more in the fourth to take a commanding lead over West Point. Trailing 5-1 with just three outs remaining, the Lady Warriors were able to trim the lead all the way down to 5-4 but the Lady Patriots managed to collect the third out and hold on to a 5-4 win.

Molly Pendley (one RBI), Lexi Shadix (one RBI) and Carlie Wilkins each posted two hits in the loss and Gracie Thompson (one hit) and Braelee Quinn (one hit) each drove in a run for West Point.

The Lady Warriors will take on the winner of Thursday’s matchup between Arab and Guntersville that day at 1:45 p.m.

Holly Pond 13 – Vinemont 6 (3A Area 13)

The Lady Broncos topped Vinemont 13-6 in the opening round of their area tournament thanks in large part to a 3-RBI day from Madison Cothren and 3-hit day from Taylor Simmons. Lexy Smith finished with a pair of RBIs in the win and Kylie Ann Perkins (one hit), Madison Heatherly (one hit), Ciera James (one hit), Emili Perry (one hit) and Kaylee Stallings (two hits, one HR) each drove in a run as well. Madyson Rickman finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple.

The Lady Broncos will advance to take on New Hope Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Vinemont will take on Brindlee Mountain Tuesday at 4 p.m.
