PREP SOFTBALL: Lady Warriors knock off 10th-ranked Huntsville at home, Cold Springs wins on the road

WEST POINT, Ala. – The Lady Warriors picked up a big win at home on Wednesday after they welcomed in no. 10 in class 7A Huntsville and sent the Lady Panthers back home with an 8-3 loss. West Point went up 3-0 in the bottom of the second and once the offense began to come alive for Huntsville, the Lady Warriors plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from the Lady Panthers.

After a scoreless first inning, Bethany Minck gave West Point a 1-0 lead with an RBI single into left field and they stretched the lead to 3-0 when Gracie Thompson and Kaci Minck came home to score on a fielder’s choice.

Carlie Wilkins worked through another scoreless inning in the third, but Huntsville managed to trim the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth. That score held until the bottom of the fifth when Makayla Brown scored on an error to extend the lead to 4-1. The Lady Panthers managed to plate a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth and make it a 4-3 game, but the Lady Warriors put things away for good in the bottom of the sixth.

An RBI double from Gracie Abbott scored Bethany Minck to go up 5-3 and back to back to back RBI singles from Lexi Shadix, Braelee Quinn and Thompson put West Point on top 8-3 with three outs remaining for Huntsville. Wilkins and the Lady Warriors’ defense collected the final three outs to seal the win over the 10th-ranked Lady Panthers.

Wilkins tossed a complete game for West Point, allowing just one earned run on eight hits and striking out seven. Minck (one RBI), Quinn (one RBI), Shadix (one RBI) each finished with two hits and Abbott finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

The Lady Warriors are now 17-16-1 on the season with a road trip to Danville coming up on Thursday.

Cold Springs 7 – Addison 4

The Lady Eagles hit the road to take on Addison Wednesday and returned home with a 7-4 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Cold Springs took an early lead after scoring three in the top of the first and after Addison tied the game in the fourth, the Lady Eagles plated four runs in the top of the fifth to pull away from the Lady Bulldogs.

Hayden Goodwin (one hit) racked up three RBIs in the win and Morgan Chasteen (two hits), Emily Williams (one hit) and Shay Sellers (one hit) each drove in a run for the Lady Eagles as well.

Winston County 4 – Meek 2

The Lady Yellow Jackets scored three in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early lead that the Lady Tigers were never able to catch. Back to back RBI singles from Emma and Bailee Fincher put two runs on the board for Meek in the fifth but it wasn’t enough to overcome Winston County and the Lady Tigers fell 4-2.

Bailee Fincher finished 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI in the loss and Abby Phillips, LaKota Alden and Savannah Smith each collected a pair of hits for Meek.
