CULLMAN – Many area band students participated in the 2019 Cullman County Honor Band recently at Wallace State Community College. Band students in grades six-12 were eligible to be a part of either the junior high or high school honor bands.

Students who tried out were required to perform scales and demonstrate their sight-reading skills. They also performed a prepared piece. Area band directors listened to the auditions to determine chair placement. Special awards were given to the first chair of each section. Those students placing in the top 25 percent were also recognized for their achievements.

The students spent all day Saturday practicing.

Vinemont High School Band Director Skylar King shared, “That’s a long practice. I think they practice from around 8 in the morning until late into the afternoon.”

The two bands then performed for friends, family and the public on Sunday.

King added, “We had 14 total students participate from Vinemont this year. I’m proud of all of my students. I’m especially proud of our first-chair students. We had Abby Jennings selected first chair baritone and Autumn Armstrong was first chair bass clarinet.”

All students from Cullman County, including home-schooled students, were invited to participate.

King said, “Every county school and city school was represented.”

This year the bands were conducted by Deanna Rizzo from Chelsea High School and Keith Anderson from James Clemens High School.
