CULLMAN – Matt Plunkett, head coach of the Cullman High School Bearcat football team for less than a year, has resigned, confirmed multiple sources Tuesday.

Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Patterson said in a statement, "In consultation with Head Coach Matthew Plunkett after the 2018-19 football season, he has informed me of his intention to resign, effective immediately, his position of varsity football head coach. Coach Plunkett will remain employed with Cullman City Schools in a teaching position.  We appreciate the hard work that Coach Plunkett put into our football program, and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Plunkett, who was head football coach and athletic director at Gardendale High School from 2013 until the end of 2017, took over the Bearcat program from longtime Cullman coach Mark Britton in January of this year.
