CULLMAN – The Cullman Police Department has recently received complaints from local businesses about delinquent power bill phone scams.

According to Sgt. Todd Chiaranda, businesses are receiving phone calls from an English-speaking man with an Indian accent claiming to represent the Cullman Power Board. The man is telling businesses that their accounts are delinquent.

The caller asks for immediate payment over the phone to avoid termination of the business’ power. The scammer will only accept payment by pre-paid money cards or iTunes cards.

Chiaranda said the Cullman Power Board will never call asking for immediate payment over the phone.

“Be very skeptical of any phone calls asking for payment over the phone,” he said. “Hang up and either contact the business in person or by phone after verifying their number.”
