WSCC men’s golf and tennis teams wrap up season at nationals; baseball players recognized

Wallace State’s men’s tennis team won the 2017 ACCC/Region 22 championship at the Jimmy Johns Tennis Complex in Decatur. HANCEVILLE – Wallace State’s men’s golf and tennis teams completed action at their respective National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I National Championships last week.

Wallace State’s golf team finished 14th overall at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan.

Freshman Chip Willoughby, a 2nd-team PING All-American, was Wallace State’s top finisher in Kansas, placing tied for 22nd with a 12-over par 300. Willoughby put together a fantastic spring season, finishing as the low medalist at both the NJCAA District 4 tournament in late April and at the Glenlakes Invitational in Foley in March. He was also an All-Tournament selection at the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC)/Region 22 championship.

Brandon Lacasse shot a 308 for the Lions, and Thomas Gevas, Luke Wilson and Charley Parvin rounded out the field for Wallace State.

Wallace State made its 22nd appearance at the national event under NJCAA Hall of Fame coach Dan York.

Wallace State’s men’s tennis team capped an impressive spring season by finishing 19th among a field of 26 teams at the National Championship in Plano, Texas.

Wallace State reintroduced tennis to the athletics slate last fall after the programs were discontinued in 2004, and the men’s team didn’t miss a beat.

The Lions prevailed as the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC)/Region 22 champions in their first season, outlasting Marion Military Institute for the title.

Cade Pressnell and Damon Calvert teamed up to earn three doubles victories at the national event, and Calvert had one singles victory.

Clint Watson picked up a pair of singles victories and Donny Camp had one.

Luke Bowden, Toddric Stallworth, Hunter Manley, Check Freeman, Alex Carter and Jacob Lambert also made up Wallace State’s championship team this season.

Wallace State tennis is coached by Tony Franklin and the assistant coach is Tim Garner.

Wallace State baseball

Wallace State sophomore Billy Reed was recently named to the All-ACCC/Region 22 first team as a catcher.

Reed was also named to the All-North Division first team along with freshmen Palmer Ford (1B), Dalton Sinquefield (OF) and Blake Rivera (P).

Reed, a Hoover product, hit over .360 for the Lions this season with five homers, 33 RBIs and 10 stolen bases, playing both catcher and second base.

Ford led Wallace State in home runs, Sinquefield led the club in RBIs and Rivera finished 7-2 with an ERA under 2.00.

Wallace State baseball went 46-13 this season, winning the ACCC North Division championship.
