BREMEN – Spring football at Cold Springs was to be concluded last Friday with a jamboree game at Holly Pond. That changed after the death of senior Nicholas Johnson on May 18. Johnson sustained injuries in a car wreck on County Road 222 May 12. He passed away two days prior to the school's graduation ceremony.

Administrators and coaches from both sides agreed to postpone the May 19 game. Then a decision was made for the game between the two to be canceled. Holly Pond went through an intersquad game last Friday after school was released. Cold Springs decided to make its intersquad game an event to honor Johnson and support his family.

The Nicholas Johnson intersquad game will be tomorrow, Tuesday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Cranford Stricklin Stadium on the Cold Springs campus. It will be the final time the Eagles work out on the gridiron for the spring.

Donations will be accepted at the game and provided to the Johnson family. Concessions will be available for the spectators.

Cold Springs is coming off a 5-6 record in 2016, with the Eagles reaching the AHSAA 2A state playoffs the last three years under coach Rod Elliott.

The Eagles go into 2017 having to replace quarterback Cayde Elliott, running back Nic Rollo, wide receiver Fisher Willoughby, defensive back Trevor Slayton and lineman Tyler Rollo.

Cold Springs will travel to Hanceville on Aug. 25 to open the new season. The Eagles are in Region 7 of Class 2A.

Donations to Johnson's family may also be made at any Traditions Bank location.
