CULLMAN –  If you attended Oktoberfest on Saturday, hopefully you got to witness the 5th Annual Cullman Charity Bed Race. Three local teams competed in the event, which was presented by the Cullman Community Lions Club.

The teams were the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Life Savers of Cullman Primary Care and Two by Two Preschool. Another team out of Birmingham was signed up to compete, but was unable to attend.

Representatives of Mattress King, the event’s sponsor, were present to announce the opening of a new store in town and to wish the competitors good luck.

The race was tight, but Two by Two came in first, winning the $500 prize, with the Life Savers tight on their wheels, scoring the $200 second-place prize. Last, but not least, the CCSO was awarded $100 for their third-place finish. The CCSO also won the Team Spirit Award.

Proceeds from the bed race are used for charitable services provided by the Lions, with a major focus being placed on the prevention, education and treatment of juvenile diabetes.

Also going on in the area was the North Alabama Volkswagen Club Oktoberfest Car Show.

The show did not have formal judging, but hundreds of people perused the various cars that signed up to be a part of the event this year. There were many different makes and models on display, but the Volkswagen Beetle, the Volkswagen Bus and classic Chevrolet Camaro were the stars of the show.
