FT. PAYNE – Cullman started the season slowly entering Friday night’s game against the Wildcats without a regional win, but the Cats took over in dominant fashion, putting up 17 unanswered points, defeating Ft. Payne 34-10.

The first quarter saw Cats’ star QB Fletcher Jennings put up an impressive aerial display, though many of the deep passes which would have led to touchdowns were called back on penalties. The Bearcats were the first to strike as West Point transfer kicker Tristen Skinner nailed a short field goal with 34 seconds left in the first quarter.

Ft. Payne matched Cullman’s effort with their own field goal with just under nine minutes in the second quarter.

The Cats’ Jennings wouldn’t be stopped as he and Ezra Burks put the home team on their backs, rushing and passing their way to a touchdown to take a brief 10-3 lead over the Wildcats. However, Ft. Payne put up its own long scoring pass to tie the game at 10 all going into the half.

Carson Freeman put up a highlight reel, catching two touchdown passes and having two waved off due to penalties. Garrett Cornelius was all over the field making sure Cullman’s defense stayed strong, shutting out the Wildcats in the second half.

Cullman’s record in 6A, Region 7 is now 1-2, with an overall record for the year of 2-3. Cullman takes on Fayette County Friday, Sept. 23 at Fayette County.
