CCBOE members recognized for academic achievements

CULLMAN – Members of the Cullman County Board of Education were recognized and honored at the regular board meeting Thursday evening.

All board members participate in the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) Academy, which provides ongoing training on important education, legal and governance issues. Cold Springs representative Wendy Crider earned a Masters 3rd year, Chris Carter of Fairview a Level 3, Gene Sullins of West Point a Level 2, Jason Speegle of Good Hope and Kenny Brockman of Hanceville a Level 1. A final public hearing was presented by CCBOE Chief Financial Officer Ed Roberson and the budget approved for the 2016-17 school year by the board.

The board gave several more approvals:

  • After-school programs at Cold Springs Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Welti Elementary and Holly Pond Elementary
  • Fairview Booster Club to pay Terrance Maze $560 for summer workouts and $250 for coaching during the 2015-16 basketball season, paid by booster club
  • Fairview High School to pay George Redding $2,200 for summer field maintenance, paid by local funds
  • Holly Pond High School to pay Janey Grimes for cleaning the football stadium after each home game and the gymnasium after each basketball home game, paid from local funds
  • Bonds on various Cullman County Schools personnel for the 2016-2017 school year –
    • Chief School Financial Officer – $100,000 bond
    • School Principals, Assistant Principals, & School Secretaries/Bookkeepers- $5,000 bond each
    • Blanket Bond on Central Office Positions – (Superintendent’s Secretary, Front Desk Clerk, Bookkeepers, CNP Director, CNP Bookkeeper, CNP Secretary) $5,000 bond each
    • CNP workers – $70,000 blanket bond to cover all CNP workers
  • Alabama Trust for Boards of Education insurance for 20-16-17 school year. General liability, errors and omissions liability fund coverage at $4,786.
  • Concession stand and press box project at Good Hope High School baseball field. The project was awarded to Yearwood Construction for $57,600, paid by Good Hope Baseball Boosters
  • Maintenance Department, Good Hope High School. Windows & HVAC- to furnish the labor to install 12 heat shields of the new HVAC units in high traffic areas to provide a safe gas exhaust cover. ADD: $2,838.11 Qualified Zone Academy Bonds (QZAB) Funds
  • Hanceville Elementary School for renovation project, re-roofing to reconcile the sales tax savings for the project, will reflect on final pay request. DEDUCT: $2,083.45 QZAB Funds
  • Maintenance Department and architect, Leonard Design, P.C. to submit plans and specifications to the Alabama State Building Commission for Vinemont Middle School re-roofing project.
  • Dr. Anita Kilpatrick, Textbook Coordinator, for permission to dispose of old science textbooks and other textbooks that are out of date and no longer suitable for student use.
  • Easement of Ingress and Egress to owners whose property adjoins with the property of Joppa School.
  • Resolution of CCBOE to apply for QZAB funds and establish Qualified Zone Academies and authorize insurance of the QZAB Revenue Warrant.
  • CNP Department to sell unusable nontransferable surplus food service equipment from Garden City Elementary, Good Hope High and Harmony School.
  • CNP Department to salvage unusable pass thru cooler from Hanceville Cafeteria and unusable reach in cooler from Good Hope High.
  • Out of state field trip for Cold Springs to attend National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana Oct. 18.
  • State field trip for Holly Pond High School Robotics Class to attend competition in Gulf Shores on Sept. 16.

The board officially appointed 2016-17 probationary principals: Alan Dunkling at Good Hope Middle School, John Hood at Good Hope High School, Michael Jones at West Point Intermediate and Kevin Sulllins at Harmony School. The probationary contract ending date is the last day of the 2016-17 school year for each.
