CULLMAN – It was an emotional evening at Cullman City Hall last night, as beloved incumbent Mayor Max A. Townson was narrowly defeated by challenger Woodrow "Woody" Jacobs. Townson, who was seeking his third term in the mayoral seat, addressed the gathered crowd just prior to the last box being counted in the race.

"The people have spoken, and they're ready for change," he said, with his wife Kay Townson by his side. Townson was gracious as he congratulated Jacobs on a great and well-run campaign, one in which he said Jacobs had quite literally worn holes in the bottoms of his shoes.

Perhaps the most emotional moment came when Jacobs said of his daughter, Hannah Jacobs, who is special needs, "My daughter loves her Max!" as Hannah and Townson embraced in a bear hug.

Both men agreed that the campaign had been a good, clean race.

As for numbers, Jacobs came out on top with 51.3 percent (1,518 votes) and Townson with 48.7 percent (1,441 votes).

Jacobs, who was president of the Cullman City Council from 2000-2008, will take office on Nov. 7.
