CULLMAN – On Friday night the Logan, Alabama-based bluegrass band BoomTown played at Berkeley Bob’s Coffeehouse.

The show was free, and the music started up in a full house. There was a “musician’s tip jar” available for anyone inclined to donate to the performers.

BoomTown played bluegrass standards, covers and even some originals. The band won First Place Bluegrass Band in the Loretta Lynn Ranch Awards, and band member Damion Kidd recently won an individual award for his proficiency on the resonator guitar.

The band is comprised of Jesse Turner, guitarist and one of the main vocalists; Michael Williams, bassist and a contributor to the vocals; Wayne Marlow, mandolin and the third vocalist; Mike Broadway, who plays the banjo for BoomTown; and the above-mentioned Kidd.

Wayne and Meredith Haynes, a couple in the audience, drove from Fultondale to see the band.

“We love this music, and especially these guys,” Wayne Haynes said.

“I wouldn’t describe myself as a bluegrass fan, but these guys make it fun. And you can really see their talent, you know. I don’t know much about bluegrass itself, but I know music, and they’re very talented,” Meredith Haynes added.

The evening was perfect for music. The temperature stayed around 70 degrees which allowed Berkeley Bob’s to open up its side-doors, the sounds of BoomTown spilling out into the streets.
