I think this is a wonderful thing. It's a great opportunity for seniors to meet and greet in one area with a day of fun and prizes, etc.”

CULLMAN – On Friday, May 13 area senior citizens played the day away at Sportsman Lake Park’s annual Senior Shindig. During the event, hosted by the Cullman County Commission on Aging, seniors participated in all of the park’s activities, including putt-putt golf, train rides and the paddle boats – free of charge! While there, the seniors also shared a delicious meal together and enjoyed some live music, again at no cost.

The Roy Crawford and the Cullman County Bluegrass Band concert was a lot of fun. Seniors sat packed under the shady tent and tapped their feet along with the music. Afterwards, there was a Sweet Tooth Contest, Hula Hoop competition and a Seniors Got Talent talent show. There was also lots of hog calling, buck dancing and people doing The Twist in hopes of outdoing one another. The talent show was a hoot, and everyone’s mouths watered as they watched the judges taste the homemade goodies entered in the Sweet Tooth Contest.

Multiple area healthcare agencies were on site which added to the fun. Each had a booth with plenty of freebies, information and friendly people who gladly talked about their services.

“I think this is a wonderful thing,” said Delitha Marchman, who was there with her mother Ms. Freda. “It's a great opportunity for seniors to meet and greet in one area with a day of fun and prizes, etc.”

“We had the best time,” said Kelly Townsend, from the Cullman County Commission on Aging. “I just want to say thank you to all the Wal-Mart Distribution employees, other volunteers and organizations that lended a helping hand today at the Shindig. And of course, a big thank you to (Cullman County Sheriff) Matt Gentry.

“I hope everyone who came out today had a great time,” she added. “We had a lot of wonderful talent in the Seniors Got Talent Show and just a wonderful time!”

Friday’s weather was perfect and Sportsman Lake was as beautiful as ever.
