West Point Christmas Tournament Day One

WEST POINT – Heavy rains and flooding of low-lying areas could do little to dampen the spirits of local fans as the flocked to the campus of West Point to witness the Christmas tradition of the West Point Christmas tournament.

FAIRVIEW 49, DANVILLE 52

The matchup between the Hawks of Danville and the Aggies of Fairview was a closely contested, evenly matched contest. Both teams played great defense which led to a low scoring first half. Fairview was able to edge out a seven-point lead thanks to some great shooting late in the second quarter. The Aggies led 31-24 over the Hawks after one-half of play.

Danville closed the gap to three early in the third with a 5-0 run. Fairview answered with a flurry of thier own, but after the dust had settled, the third quarter ended in a deadlock at 37 and set up a thrilling finish to the first game of the tournament.

The Hawks struck first in the final frame but Fairview quickly returned the favor, tying the game once more. Midway through the quarter and trailing by three, the Aggies had a chance to pull ahead at the free throw line but they could only sink one out of five. The Hawks, however, were near perfect from the line going three for four down the stretch. This led to a four-point victory. The Hawks will face West Point Monday night at 6p.m.Fairview will face Priceville Monday at 4:45 p.m.

GOOD HOPE 60, LAWRENCE COUNTY 39

Lawrence County started the game on a 4-0 run that prompted a quick Good Hope timeout less than two minutes into the game. The break in the action did them wonders as Matt Cofer led the Raiders on a run of their own, closing out the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a seven-point lead after one-quarter of play.

The second quarter was all Good Hope. The Raiders dominated on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball as well as cleaning the glass. The result was a commanding 20 point lead heading to the locker room.

Good Hope continued to play well and control the pace of the game through the entirety of the second half, cruising to an easy victory.

PRICEVILLE 75,  RA HUBBARD 46

From the opening tip, the Priceville Bulldogs showed that they would be a force to be reckoned with in the West Point Christmas Tournament as they easily dispatched RA Hubbard in the only matchup of the night to not feature a team from Cullman County.
