HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Still don’t know what you’re going to be for Halloween? Don’t worry. Your costume might already be hanging on a rack at That Thrift Store.
Tucked at 914 Main St. NE in Hanceville, the family-owned shop has a whole rack of costume possibilities waiting for last-minute trick-or-treaters and partygoers: witches, superheroes, a few mysterious creatures and, yes, even a bright pink suit labeled “Gov. Ivey” for anyone ready to try out their best Southern drawl.
Costumes are priced from just 59 cents to $5, and qualifying costumes can be included in the store’s $5 fill-a-bag clothing deal.
“We have all kinds of great deals and treasures for people to explore,” said owners Matilda Schaefer, and husband, Michael Schaefer.
Need a little help putting a look together? Just ask. The owners say helping shoppers dream up costume ideas is one of the most fun parts of the job.
A bag full of bargains
The store’s signature deal is simple: grab a Walmart-size bag and fill it with any clothing you choose for just $5.
If you’d rather pick out a piece or two, adult clothing is $1 each, and children’s clothing, sizes 2T to 20, is 50 cents each. Baby clothing, newborn to 24 months, is also 50 cents each and can be included in a $5 bag when combined with adult or children’s clothing.
Shoppers can also watch for colored stickers around the store. Red-sticker items are just 25 cents, and blue-sticker items are 50% off. Daily specials and surprise flash sales add even more ways to save.
Halloween isn’t the last holiday
While costumes are in the spotlight this week, the shelves at That Thrift Store are stocked all year long with freshly washed clothes, shoes, purses, vintage décor, glassware, kitchenware, books and collectibles, many priced from $2.99 to $24.99.
“We are here to provide affordable items for the holidays,” Schaefer said. “We sell all of our seasonal stuff very, very cheap, so you don’t have to spend a whole bunch of money to decorate your home for the holidays.”
With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, Schaefer shared a tradition her own family has adopted: a “thrift mix.”
“Our family decided to do a thrift mix, where one or two items would be purchased brand new, and the rest of the items would be from the thrift store,” she said. “So that’s a great idea for right now for anybody to participate in Christmas.”
