HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council addressed several proposed policy changes, department appointment procedures and upcoming holiday events during its regular meeting Thursday, Oct. 22.

Among the items discussed was Resolution 2026-8, which would amend the city’s vehicle policy. The Council voted to postpone action on the resolution for six months to allow additional time to evaluate the Hanceville Police Department and review the proposed changes in greater detail.

The motion passed with Councilman Robert Powell casting the only dissenting vote.

The Council also considered several proposals concerning the appointment of city department heads.

Resolution 2026-10, addressing the municipal leadership interview process, was postponed to allow the resolution to be rewritten. Mayor Nolan Bradford suggested removing the word “leadership” from the resolution.

Ordinance 2026-12, which would give the City Council appointment authority over the fire chief position, failed to advance after Powell made a motion to approve the ordinance but received no second.

Two similar proposals, Ordinance 2026-13 concerning the appointment process for the public works director and Ordinance 2026-14 concerning the park director appointment process, also failed to advance. Powell made motions to approve both ordinances, but neither received a second.

The Council approved Resolution 2026-9, addressing the city’s credit card policy.

In other business, the Council approved the purchase of a tractor for the Public Works Department from Frederick’s Outdoors in Decatur. The purchase totaled $50,500 after a $4,000 municipal discount.

The Council also approved Resolution 2026-1022, opting in to the statewide Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. The resolution provides an exemption from city sales tax on qualifying purchases during the designated holiday period in February 2027.

Council members also addressed upcoming holiday activities, including the city’s Tinsel Trail and Christmas Tree Lighting at Veterans Park. Setup for the Tinsel Trail is scheduled to begin Nov. 14, with the Tree Lighting planned for Nov. 21.

The Cullman County Christmas Parade is scheduled for Dec. 5. Local street closures associated with the event will include Michelle Street and Park Street.

The Council also approved four three-year reappointments to the Historic Preservation Commission. Those reappointed were Margie Burkhart for Place 4, Delton Blalock for Place 5, Garrett Gilliland for Place 6 and Robert Powell for Place 7.

Additionally, the Council voted to reschedule its Nov. 26 meeting to Tuesday, Nov. 24.

The Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12, at 6 p.m.
