CULLMAN, Ala. – At its regular meeting on May 19, the Cullman City School Board approved facility upgrade bids, changes to athletic services and personnel decisions.
One of the approved bids was from Singer H&R for $152,340 for new serving lines at Cullman Middle School. Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff explained that the current cafeteria serving line is outdated and needs upgrades to help both staff and students.
“With another grant level coming, we wanted to go ahead and do that this year to make it more organized and more efficient for the workers and students,” Kallhoff said.
The board also took time to recognize Child Nutrition Program employees at the meeting, and later shared a photo of the staff on its social media pages, saying, “The Child Nutrition Program Employees were recognized in the May board meeting. The 5 CNP programs are on track to serve nearly 344,000 meals for the 25/26 school year. To put this in perspective, that is almost 3 times as many meals as the average Waffle House, and Waffle House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. CNP Director Camille Wiley, CNP Operations Associate Amy Emmert, our school-based managers, and CNP employees were thanked for their leadership in feeding our students with a smile each and every day.”
The board approved a $1,025M bid from Wyatt Builds, pending architecture certification, for a playground project on the Cullman Intermediate and West Elementary School campus. The new playground will have synthetic turf, a shaded area for instruction, swings, playground equipment and a small turf field for activities. Kallhoff said the area, called the “Smith Center,” will be fenced and should be finished before the new school year begins in August.
The board approved a $447,900 bid from Blalock Building Company, Inc., pending architecture certification, for renovation of the sixth-grade wing at Cullman Middle School. The updates will include new flooring, paint, cabinets, doors, ceiling tiles, lighting and classroom furniture in the original building behind the newer additions.
The board approved a new contract with Baptist Health to provide athletic training services. Kallhoff said Baptist Health will supply athletic trainers for school sports and activities, taking over from the previous provider.
Courtney Speciale was officially hired as the assistant principal at East Elementary School for the 2025/2026 school year.
The next Cullman City School Board meeting will take place Tuesday, June 16, at 8:30 a.m. at the central office.
