VINEMONT, Ala. – The first area meeting between Vinemont and Holly Pond took place at Holly Pond on Monday afternoon, and the Eagles ended up defeating the Broncos, 13-2. Both teams met up again Tuesday at Vinemont in a huge doubleheader for both teams. In game one, the score was tied up at one early on, but the Eagles ended up taking a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish, and they ended up defeating the Broncos 8-2.Â
Travis Speer took the mound for Vinemont and after allowing a one-out single, he got Ty Harrison to ground out into an inning-ending double play to keep Holly Pond off the scoreboard. The Eagles gave their starter some run support in their half. Harrison ended up being the starter for the Broncos, and he quickly found himself in a jam. Josh Rhodes drew a one-out walk, then a ground ball moved him over to second. After Ryne Dalton drew a four-pitch walk, Rhodes stole third and scored on a passed ball to give Vinemont the early lead. The Broncos got that run back in the top of the second. Ty Dunn drew a two-out walk, then two pitches later, Camden Bell hit an RBI double to right field to tie the game up at one.
The score would stay the same until the bottom of the third inning. Tucker Mauter hit a one-out single, and he would later steal second. Rhodes flew out to left field, but a Bronco error after the fly out allowed Mauter to cross the plate to put the Eagles up 2-1. Vinemont added onto their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Speer hit a one-out triple to right field and ended up scoring on an RBI single by Davey Johnson to make it a 3-1 game. After Speer struck out two in a scoreless fifth inning, the Eagles broke the game wide open in their half.Â
Rhodes and Carson Drummond each drew back-to-back walks with one out, then one out later, Speer helped out his own cause by hitting an RBI single to left field to give Vinemont a 4-1 lead. A balk brought home Drummond to widen their lead to 5-1, then back-to-back hit-by-pitches loaded the bases with two outs. Will Conquest scored on a wild pitch, then Jhace Cornelius hit a two-run single to make it 8-1. Johnathan Hamby scored on a Vinemont error in the top of the seventh to cut it to 8-2, but the Broncos wouldn’t get any closer after that, as Speer struck out Dunn to help seal the 8-2 win for the Eagles in game one. Vinemont is now 6-1 in their last seven games.
Cornelius collected a hit and a pair of RBIs for Vinemont, while Speer and Johnson each added a pair of hits and an RBI in the win. Speer gave up just six hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out six in his complete game effort. For Holly Pond, Bell finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.
