HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council at is April 9 meeting addressed online registration for youth parks and recreation league sports.

Council members voted to use Jarvis Recreation Management registration management software as a way to make signups more efficient.

In comparison, there were three in-person signups this year. The council said using online registration would make it easier for parents and caregivers, who would normally have to be at a sign-up location by 4:30 p.m.

The online system can also be used for pavilion rentals, with any refunds also issued through Jarvis. The system also offers a point-of-sale functionality for concessions, etc. Additionally, it can send mass updates when games are canceled to those who are registered that day.

“We can also set a hyperlink on our website and link it for park and recreation so the calendar may be embedded,” Councilman Robert Powell stated. “This would streamline everything so they don’t have to come here to do it, but they still could if needed.”

The council reminded residents of the Free Landfill Pick-up days April 13-16, as part of the 2026 Spring Clean-up. All items must be out by 6 a.m. on April 16. Items that cannot be picked up are gas tanks, paint, batteries, household garbage, hazardous waste, tires and shingles.

Councilwoman Jana Shelton brought attention to the need for volunteers to help with local seniors.

“I just want to let everyone know that the Cullman Commission on Aging and all the senior citizen sites are having trouble getting volunteers,” she said.

She said Meals on Wheels is at a critical stage at this time and urged the public to reach out to the Commission on Aging. She said anyone who would like to volunteer or knows someone who would like to should visit cullmancoa.com or call 256-734-1241.

Mayor Nolan Bradford gave an update on repairs on the Commercial Street bridge. He said repairs are  estimated to be $26,800 to make it structurally sound, but shared, “Our insurance is going to cover it.”

Bradford moved on to a feasibility study for dredging Mud Creek.

“(Public Works Operations Manager) Rusty (Fields) and I met with engineers a month and a half ago and, if we submit this form, they will spend $100,000 on a feasibility study to see how much it would cost to do that,” said the mayor. “In the 80s they dressed it up at certain points and stopped. This would finish it.”

He said that, depending on what was found, the city would have to cover the cost, but would not be obligated to at that time if not within the budget.

“It needs to be done,” Bradford said, stressing that until it is in budget, the feasibility study would help with insight on the situation.

The council turned its attention to police surplus items for Wallace State.

“There were rifle stands with locks on it; they wanted two of those,” Bradford said.

He told the council that if they voted to surplus and there are additional items needed, it will be handled at the next council meeting.

The council also discussed a Wallace State Community College Future Foundation scholarship established in 2018. “This is just to continue this scholarship through Wallace State,” Bradford noted.

The annual Grilled Cheese Festival will close Commercial, Church, Blountsville and Bangor Streets on May 23, 2026.

The council introduced Ordinance 2026-7 to vacate Sherry Street. There will be a public hearing at the next council meeting.

“The phone system is the next item,” Bradford started. “We can take everything out and start fresh or we can keep what we’ve got.”

He told the council that the contract review will take place in May. Powell voted that the matter be tabled.

The council also voted to accept fencing bids for all five fields at C.W. Day Park. Bids must be submitted by April 30, 2026.

The next Hanceville City Council meeting will take place Thursday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall.
