Obituary: Jerry Don Payne

Jerry Don Payne, a cherished member of the Hanceville community and a decorated veteran, passed away on March 10, 2026, in Hanceville, Alabama, at the age of 77. Born on May 20, 1948, in Cullman, Alabama, Jerry lived a life characterized by service, dedication, and love for his family and country. 

A proud veteran, Jerry served as a Specialist 5 in the Vietnam War, earning numerous commendations for his bravery and commitment. His military honors included the National Defense Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign, and an Overseas Bar. His legacy of service is a testament to his character and love for his nation. 

Jerry leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his children, Jeri Brown, Terry Payne, and Chris Gamble (Tasha); as well as his grandchildren, Kyle Brown (Chelsy), Logan Starnes (Katie), Tyler Payne, Jacob Payne (Emma), Abigail Payne, Madison Gamble, and Caelan Carnes (Emily). Additionally, he is remembered fondly by a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carmen Payne; his parents, Frank and Ossie Payne; and his siblings, Doris George, Thomas Payne “Bud”, and Sharon Hood. Their memories will forever be cherished as part of his life story. 

Visitation services will be held at Hanceville Funeral Home on March 13, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will also take place at Hanceville Funeral Home on March 14, 2026, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Antioch Cemetery. 

Jerry Don Payne’s life was a reflection of love for family, pride in service, and enduring spirit. He will be missed profoundly by all who knew and loved him.
