Mr. Umphrey passed away January the 16th, 2026, in his home in Deatsville AL where he and his wife had lived since 1985. He was born on December the 25th, 1942, in Cullman AL to Urias and Macie Umphrey. He graduated from West Point High School in 1961. He served four years in the United States Air Force and attended Jacksonville State University earning his Bachelor of Science in Accounting. On December 18, 1970, he married his college girlfriend, Sue Moore, and they began their life together in Montgomery, AL. Al and Sue were married 53 years. Al was a member of the First Baptist Church Montgomery since 1972 and had many lifelong friends in his Sunday School Class.
Al passed the CPA exam in 1981 where he worked for the State of Alabama in the State Comptroller’s office for more than 25 years. He retired in 1993 and later worked for Montgomery County an additional 10 years until 2003 as the County Deputy Administrator.
Al and Sue enjoyed traveling, having been to Nova Scotia, Germany, Amsterdam, and Brussels. They enjoyed some time in British Columbia Canada and many parts of the United States. One of their favorite destinations was the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, especially during Christmas time.
In addition to traveling, Al was a fan of math puzzles and enjoyed solving them. He loved dogs, especially German Shepards, and had several in his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother Ulen Lee Umphrey (Patricia); a sister Doris Harry (Jimmy), and a nephew Calvin Lee Umphrey. He is survived by his nephews James Umphrey (Conniejo) and Tim Harry (Terri), a niece Jolanda Hutson (Darryl), and several great nephews and nieces.
There will be a Memorial service at the First Baptist Church of Montgomery on February 15, 2026. The service will be in the Stakely Sanctuary with visitation at 1 p.m. and the Memorial starting a 2 pm.
