HANCEVILLE, Ala – The no. 2 Vinemont Lady Eagles faced off against the no. 7 Hanceville Lady Bulldogs in the first varsity girls’ matchup of the tournament on Monday night. Hanceville held a slim lead after one quarter, but a huge second quarter by Vinemont gave them the lead at the half. The Lady Eagles went on cruise control after that, as they went on to roll past the Lady Bulldogs, 66-34, to move on to the semifinals.

Vinemont didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard first, as Reagan Robinson hit a driving layup less than 10 seconds into the game. Robinson collected a steal and found Arleigh Thomason down low for the score to give the Lady Eagles an early 4-0 lead. Mattie Keith answered with a three on the other end to make it a 4-3 game, then after a pair of Caroline Miller free throws made it 6-3, Keith drained a three from the left wing to tie the game up at six. Later in the quarter, Piper Butts knocked down a three, and Kerrigon Moore added a basket in the paint to give the Lady Bulldogs an 11-8 lead. A layup by Robinson and a free throw by Vayda Yarbrough tied things up at 11, but Moore split her free throws, and Alex Twitty added two free throws of her own to put Hanceville ahead, 14-11, going into the second period.

Robinson and Miller each hit baskets down low to give Vinemont a 15-14 lead early in the second. Both teams traded leads for the next few possessions. After a Moore basket gave the Lady Bulldogs a 19-18 lead, Robinson and company took over after that, outscoring Hanceville, 18-1. Robinson scored 12 of the Lady Eagles’ final 18 points of the first half, and Yarbrough’s steal and layup to end the half gave Vinemont a commanding 36-20 lead going into the locker room.

The Lady Bulldogs quickly cut into the Lady Eagles’ lead to start out the second half. Butts knocked down a three from the right wing, then Moore’s three-point play cut it to 36-26 early in the third. Yarbrough, though, scored the next five points for Vinemont to put them ahead, 41-26. Four free throws by Twitty trimmed it to 44-30 late in the third quarter, but Thomason’s three before the buzzer gave the Lady Eagles a 47-30 lead going into the final period.

Vinemont quickly widened their lead even more in the fourth quarter. Thomason scored through a foul and ended up hitting the free throw to make it a 50-30 game. Miller buried a three, and Robinson scored six straight points to give the Lady Eagles a 59-30 lead. Jadyn Knott and Haley Millwood scored the final seven points to put the finishing touches on a 66-34 win for Vinemont, as they will move on to the semifinals.

Robinson finished with 24 points for Vinemont. Miller posted 15 points, and Thomason ended up with nine points. Piper Butts led Hanceville with nine points. Moore added eight points. Twitty finished with seven points, and Keith knocked down a pair of threes to finish with six points on the night.
