CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Middle School students recently had an opportunity for some hands-on experience with some of the potential career options they could pursue at Wallace State Community College (WSCC) after graduation.
The annual Tools of the Trade Career Fair, coordinated by the Cullman Economic Development Agency and WSCC, offered eighth-grade students from Cullman City Schools and surrounding districts and schools the chance to explore a wide range of career options through interactive, hands-on experiences.
Students had the opportunity to learn more about careers in health science, welding technology, HVAC, building science, geospatial informatics, machine tool technology, robotics, equipment operations, the entertainment industry and salon and spa management.
“Events like Tools of the Trade give middle school students an early look at potential career pathways, helping them connect their interests with real-world skills,” Cullman City Schools Career Coach Paula Graham explained. “By engaging with local employers and educators, students gain insight into the training and education needed for different professions — preparing them to make informed choices about high school coursework, technical programs and future career goals.”
Graham noted students loved getting a chance to experience how these careers work in a hands-on approach, as opposed to just hearing and learning about them from a book of presentation.
“They enjoyed using real tools, practicing CPR, trying out robotics, styling hair on a mannequin or adding to an art project,” Graham said. “Many eighth graders do not realize how many jobs exist beyond the ones they see every day, so this career fair plays an important role in building career awareness and introducing them to new and exciting job possibilities.”
