COUNTY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: Fairview, Vinemont, Good Hope advance to semifinals

VINEMONT, Ala. – This year’s Cullman County Volleyball Tournament officially tipped off at Vinemont High School Monday night and after a night loaded with tight matchups, three teams have secured spots in the semifinals. Fairview edged Holly Pond 3-2 in a back and forth thriller, Vinemont survived a hard-fought battle with Cold Springs 3-2 and Good Hope capped the night with a 3-0 sweep of Hanceville.

Fairview 3 – Holly Pond 2 (26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-6)

Holly Pond jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the first set, but Fairview rallied to tie things up at 7. The score remained knotted at 12 as the set went on before the Broncos pulled ahead 18-16 late. The Aggies came back to tie the score at 20 and Fairview was able to edge out Holly Pond 26-24 to win the set.

The second set was just as tight as the first. The score was tied at 12 midway through the set but Holly Pond was able to take an 18-17 later on. The Broncos led 23-20 at one point and held off a late push from the Aggies to win the second set 25-23.

Holly Pond led most of the way throughout the third set, but Fairview rallied late to things up at 20. The Broncos led 23-20 at one point but the Aggies completed the comeback and took the third set 26-24.

The back and forth battle continued in the fourth set. The scores was knotted at 8 early on before Holly Pond moved ahead to take a 17-6 lead. With both teams tied at 24, the Broncos scored the final two points to secure a 26-24 win and force a fifth set.

The tiebreaker set was the most one-sided of the night. Fairview built a 9-3 lead early on and outpaced Holly Pond 6-3 the rest of the way to take the set 15-6 and win the marathon match 3-2.

Fairview will face West Point in the county semifinals Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Vinemont 3 – Cold Springs 2 (25-19, 24-26, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13)

Vinemont held a slim, 5-4 lead early in the first set and extended that lead to 13-5 as play went on. Cold Springs was able to trim the lead to 16-12 at one point but couldn’t climb back any closer than that and Vinemont held on to win the first set 25-19.

Cold Springs got off to a 5-0 start in the second set but Vinemont battled back to tie things up at 8. Vinemont moved ahead after that and led 20-17 at one point but Cold Springs rallied to come from behind and take the second set 26-24.

Cold Springs led 9-5 early in the third set but Vinemont was able to respond and tie things up at 15. The score remained knotted at 19 later in the set but Cold Springs finished strong to win the set 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. 

Vinemont jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the fourth set and kept Cold Springs at arms’ length the rest of the way. Vinemont led 21-13 at one point and went on to take the set 25-16, forcing a tiebreaker set with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

Both teams traded the lack back and forth in the final set. Vinemont led early on before Cold Springs bounced back to take an 8-7 lead. The score was tied at 12 later in the set but Vinemont scored three of the next four points to win the set 15-13 and advance with a hard-fought 3-2 win in the match.

Vinemont will take on Good Hope in the county semifinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Good Hope 3 – Hanceville 0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-14)

The Raiders got off to a dominant start in the opening set. Good Hope led 9-1 early and maintained a 17-5 lead as the set went on. The Raiders moved ahead 21-6 at one point and went on to take the first set 25-9.

Hanceville battled back in the second set, taking an early, 7-4 lead and maintaining a 13-11 advantage midway through the set. However, Good Hope rallied to score nine of the next 12 points to take a 20-16 lead and then the Raiders posted five straight to win the second set 25-16.

Good Hope held a 6-4 lead early in the third set and maintained an 11-7 lead as the set went on. The Raiders pulled ahead 15-9 at one point but the Bulldogs were able to trim the lead down to 15-13. Good Hope scored the next four points to move in front 19-13 and cruised to a 25-14 win and a spot in the semifinals. 

Good Hope will face Vinemont in the county semifinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
