CULLMAN, Ala. – Senior Day at the Cullman County Fair took place Wednesday, Oct. 21, bringing around 500 people aged 55 and older to enjoy a day at the Cullman County Fairgrounds.

Cullman County Commission on Aging Director Stephanie Lawson said a great event brings people together, but the fellowship is what truly makes it special.

“It was such a fun event with perfect weather for an amazing time had by all,” Lawson said. “We had about 500 seniors in attendance. We are thankful that the Lions Club was able to cook extra corn dogs and hot dogs for our large group! Also, Jamie Looney and her Grand Ole Opry group provided wonderful entertainment.”

Lawson said the event was sponsored by Aveanna, and Premier Bank sponsored the lunch.

“The event had free admission, free parking and free lunch for all,” she said. “We did not offer rides, but they were able to enjoy the exhibits and purchase candied apples.”

Lawson said one of her favorite moments of Senior Day was honoring veterans.

“They had the veterans come up and provided  them with a certificate, while playing a patriotic song,” she shared. “Everyone was on their feet to honor and thank them. It was a blessing to see. We also heard from several of our elected officials. Sheriff (Matt) Gentry, Revenue Commissioner Barry Willingham and Commissioner Garry Marchman made their final Fair Day stage appearances in their current roles. There may have even been a few emotional moments as they reflected on their time serving the community. Our elected officials always make a great showing at Fair Day, taking the opportunity to thank our seniors for all they do and for the many ways they contribute to our community.”
