ARLEY, Ala. – Meek put the game away before halftime Friday night, building a 46-point lead through two quarters and shutting out Waterloo 46-0 in a Class 1A, Region 7 matchup at Meek Field.
The Tigers (3-3, 2-2) returned from their open week with their most complete defensive performance of the season. Meek held Waterloo off the scoreboard from the opening kickoff through the final horn and improved to 3-0 at home.
Meek established control almost immediately. The Tigers held an 8-0 advantage with 10:31 remaining in the first quarter, then carried a 14-0 lead into the second.
The margin grew quickly from there. Meek pushed its lead to 30-0 with 6:21 left before halftime and added two more scores before the break, sending the Tigers to the locker room with a 46-0 cushion.
Neither team scored in the second half, leaving Meek with its first shutout of the season. The Tigers’ defense kept Waterloo from mounting a comeback while the offense protected the commanding lead it created over the first 24 minutes.
Friday’s result gave Meek its third victory of the year and moved the Tigers back to .500. It also provided a decisive response to a 56-6 loss at Addison on Sept. 18, Meek’s final game before its scheduled open date.
Waterloo (1-5, 1-3) entered the game after a 38-14 loss at Tharptown. The Cougars’ lone victory came Sept. 18, when they defeated Phillips 41-0.
The win continued Meek’s control of the series. The Tigers defeated Waterloo 64-6 last season and have won all six recorded meetings between the programs.
Meek will remain in region play next week when it travels to Belgreen. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.
