Derek Lynn Smith, 44, of Athens, Alabama, passed away peacefully Friday evening, September 18, 2026, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
Derek was born December 23, 1981, to William “Chuck” and Linda Smith of Athens, Alabama. He was a true outdoorsman who loved fishing, listening to music, and enjoying the simple moments that made life special. More than anything, Derek will be remembered for the love he had for his family and friends and the special place he held in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Although his battle with cancer was difficult, Derek faced it with strength and courage. His life was a testament to the love and memories he shared with those around him. His time with us may have been cut short, but the impact he made on the lives of others will never be forgotten.
Derek leaves behind his two children, Jordan Smith and Aerial Smith, and his three grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters, Karen (Lamont) Freeman of Athens, Alabama, and Dana Smith (Reese) Wright of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his brother, Chris Smith of Athens, Alabama; and his exceptional friends, David “Buster” Williams, Lori Ussery, and Jeff McLaughlin, all of Athens, Alabama.
Derek was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William “Chuck” and Linda Smith & exceptional mentor Doug Wells of Athens, Al.
Derek will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Though he is no longer here to share a fishing trip, a ROLL TIDE! a song, a laugh, or a simple conversation, the memories he created will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
Rest peacefully, Derek. Your fight is over, but your memory and the love you gave will live on forever.
