Hanceville man killed in Cherokee County crash

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. – A Hanceville man was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, in Cherokee County, Alabama.

Alabama State Troopers identified the victim as Marco Cortez-Gomez, 40.

Troopers said Cortez-Gomez was fatally injured when the 2010 Nissan Altima he was a passenger in collided head-on with a 2024 Honda HR-V Sport driven by Katie G. Miller, 22, of Cedar Bluff.

Cortez-Gomez was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Miller and the driver of the Nissan, Benjamin Cortez-Gomez, 44, of Hanceville, were both injured and transported to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, in Rome, Georgia for treatment.

The crash occurred on Alabama 273 near Cherokee County 48, approximately 4 miles north of Leesburg, in Cherokee County.

Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
