William (Bill) Edward Bynum Jr., a resident of Horton Alabama, passed away at the age of 75, on March 30th, 2026, at his home.
William, known to most as Bill, was born in Cullman Alabama on April 21st of 1950. Educated at Cullman High School, St Bernard College and then University of Alabama at Birmingham, He held a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting. He spent his youth in the Cullman area where his mother owned the Mug and Cone Restaurant, a popular Cullman hangout. Later he took over the business from his mother, remodeling and renaming it the Bynum Family Restaurant. William attended Agape Bible Institute and served in numerous churches as an Usher, Sunday School Teacher, and pulpit supply.
He was married to Phyllis George on November 14th, 1979. Together they raised seven children, Angela, Sherry, Roger, Brandy, Amber, Billy, and Zach. They suffered the loss of their granddaughter, Amy Daneron, in 1988. They also suffered the loss of their daughter Mary Elizabeth Bynum in 1990.
They later moved from Cullman to Eva Alabama, living there several years before moving to the Oneonta Alabama area to work as House Parents and later Directors at the Freedom Ranch Children’s Home in 1997. Over the years at the Freedom Ranch, they fostered over 70 children.
After leaving the Freedom Ranch they moved to the Horton area and William began a career with AutoZone. In 2006 they again suffered loss with the death of their son Roger and a week later his wife Bobbie Jo in unrelated incidents. William suffered a devastating blow when Phyllis, his wife of 28 years, passed away in April of 2008 after a short battle with Liver Cancer. He spent his remaining years working at AutoZone until his recent illness made it impossible to continue working.
In late 2024, William was diagnosed with colon cancer, which he later passed away as the result of.

His Father Dr. William E. Bynum and Mother Bernice Bynum. Brothers Don G. Bynum and Jack Chandler. Sister Wayne Phelps. His Wife Phyllis Bynum, His Son Roger Bynum and Daughter in Law Bobbie Jo Bynum, His Daughter Mary Bynum, and Granddaughter Amy Dameron.
William is survived by:
Sons: William E. Bynum III (Shayla) and Zachary Bynum (Sarah). Daughters: Angela Johnson (Phillip), Sherry Shelton (Michael), Brandy Huff (Jamie), and Amber Ingram (Brad). As well as18 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services to be held at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home 255 County Road 1435 Cullman, Al 35058, on Saturday April 4th at 2 p.m. Visitation will precede the Funeral Service on the same day at 1 p.m. Interment to Follow at Lystra Baptist Church Cemetery, 1378 County Road 1592 Baileyton, AL 35019.
