WALTER, Ala. – A $1.3 million state grant awarded to Walter Water Authority will support system upgrades while helping keep water rates lower for customers in the Walter area.
According to information shared by Alabama Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, the funding was secured through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and does not require a local funding match.
Gudger said the grant was obtained with the support of the local legislative delegation and noted the project has already been completed.
“This project was recently completed,” Gudger said.
While specific components of the project were not detailed, officials said the funding was used for upgrades and maintenance within the water system.
Officials said the full grant funding allows the water authority to complete upgrades without requiring additional local funds, helping reduce the need for potential rate increases.
Phillip Hicks, a board member of Walter Water Authority, expressed appreciation for the support from state leaders.
“We very much appreciate Senator Gudger’s help in securing this grant for the benefit of our community,” Hicks said.
Gudger also credited collaboration with state and local officials, including Gov. Kay Ivey and members of the Cullman County legislative delegation, including Rep. Heath Allbright, R-Holly Pond; Rep. Cindy Myrex, R-Cullman; and Rep. Tim Wadsworth, R-Arley.
He described the project as part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure in rural Alabama.
