HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State Community College’s recent production of “Xanadu” brought to life a mix of exciting music, humor and nostalgia, making a unique addition to the college’s fine arts lineup.
Director Angela Green said the show had been on her radar for years, inspired by both the 1980 film and the Broadway adaptation. She chose to stage the production this season in part due to the renewed interest in roller skating among students and 1980s culture and fashions, which perfectly align with the show’s style.
Green mentioned several meaningful moments about the production, including performing alongside fellow fine arts instructors and sharing the stage with graduating students in their final show at Wallace State.
Bringing “Xanadu” to life presented a number of challenges, particularly incorporating roller skating safely into the stage design and balancing sound between performers and a live band. Green credited sound designer Wes Clabo and set designer Mark Eccleston for successfully integrating those elements into the production.
Throughout rehearsals, Green said, the cast embraced the show’s “campy” and comedic tone, growing more confident in its unique style. Cast members also supported one another behind the scenes, assisting with quick changes and set transitions.
The production was well received by audiences, with many attendees describing it as a fun and nostalgic experience. Green noted that the positive response may influence future show selections, encouraging productions centered around specific musical styles or time periods.
Wallace State Fine and Performing Arts will continue its season when the Wallace State Singers stage “The Great American Road Trip” March 27–29.
