CULLMAN, Ala. – Students at Cullman City Primary School took part in the school’s annual Book Buddy Adoption, giving K-2 students a chance to make a new friend while finding new ways to love reading.

Each student adopted a special stuffed puppy or kitten to take home “forever” to snuggle, hug and “feed with words” through reading. This tradition kicks off Read Across America Week and fosters a lifelong love of books in a cozy, memorable way.

The activity was inspired by Lisa Papp’s 2016 children’s book “Madeline Finn and the Library Dog,” and students learned that reading aloud builds confidence and that even the quietest listener can be the best audience.

“A heartfelt thank you goes to parents and the PTO for providing over 750 stuffed puppies and kittens, ensuring every child had a Book Buddy to read to and love,” CCPS Media Specialist Hilary Nix said. “Through moments like these, Cullman City Primary continues nurturing confident, joyful readers one story at a time.”

Read Across America is a national initiative for teachers and schools across the nation to promote reading and literacy among young students.
