DODGE CITY, Ala. – In 2021 Susan Sandlin, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, found that she had more time for her crafting hobby. She spent previous years as an insurance agent with Jean Deese Insurance Agency, but discovered craft YouTubers and decided to give it a try.
“I didn’t even know people did things like that on YouTube,” she said. “I saw it and told myself, ‘I can do that!’”
Sandlin began her craft YouTube channel, Susie on the Farm, but said her crafts quickly outgrew her basement. She decided to open up her store just off Exit 299 at 851 Alabama Highway 69.
She most recently uploaded a video titled “25 Spring Thrift Flips.” She showcases a few thrifted items and steps you through her process of upcycling with Fusion paint, IOD products, Roycycled Decoupage Paper, DIY Paint and Connie Lines & Designs rice paper.
When asked how she chose the name Susie on the Farm, Sandlin said her family has several acres for crops, but she does not tend to them.
“My husband and son do all of that,” she laughed. “Susie on the farm.”
Her inventory features several vignettes styled with repurposed, farm-like decor. She thrifts the items that are destined for landfills and gives them new life. Whether that’s with clay paint, which she sells at her store, intricate transfer sheets or new wood stain.

Not only are there items destined for your nightstand or entryway table, but there’s also Weezie the shop cat! Sandlin said the kitty showed up one day and when she was able to catch her, she brought her in and the feline now lives in the shop.
