(Update) South Carolina man charged with attempted murder in Cullman stabbing

The Cullman Police Department on Saturday evening said an arrest has been made in connection with the stabbing that occurred earlier in the day behind Publix in Cullman.

Michael Athanasius Helring, of Hanahan, South Carolina, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The CPD said the victim’s name will not be released at this time.

Cullman Police Chief Joey Duncan said, “(I) would like to commend our patrol officers, investigators, the Cullman County Sheriff’s deputies and District Attorney Champ Crocker for their swift response and strong partnership in this case. Through teamwork, professionalism and a shared commitment to public safety, their coordinated efforts led to a quick arrest. We are grateful for their continued dedication and service to our community.”

CULLMAN, Ala. – Two suspects were detained following a stabbing that took place behind Publix in the Cullman Shopping Center on the north side of the city Saturday, Feb. 21. The victim was airlifted to a regional hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The Cullman Police Department said officers and investigators responded to the scene and detained “two suspects of interest who may be involved in the incident.” The investigation remains active.

“At this time, the incident is believed to be isolated. The victim’s name and additional details will not be released, pending further investigation,” said the CPD.
