GOOD HOPE, Ala. –  The Good Hope City Council at its Monday, Feb. 9, meeting discussed financial updates. The council reported that tax revenue has increased by 25% compared to the same period last year, totaling approximately $25,000 in additional revenue. Growth was attributed to strong sales from several local businesses, including Love’s Truck Stop, Van’s Sporting Goods and Jack’s.

Council members discussed a partial payment made from the City’s cash reserve to United Contractors while awaiting reimbursement funds. They also discussed changes to how interest is handled on government accounts, eliminating the need to transfer funds to maximize returns.

Work at the wastewater treatment plant is nearing completion, with only minor punch-list items remaining.

Improvements at local parks are underway, including field maintenance and pre-emergent treatments in preparation for spring.

Registration for upcoming youth baseball, softball and T-ball programs stands at 147 participants. Online signups will remain open until Feb. 16.

The council also approved Ordinance No. 004-2026, extending the City’s participation in the back-to-school sales tax holiday through October 2029.

The council voted to amend the City’s budget following the decision to decline a $250,000 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) sidewalk grant. The amendment was necessary to remove the grant from the budget after notifying the State of the City’s decision.

In other business, the council talked about the construction of a new senior center building across from Duke’s Barbershop. The facility will also serve as a 300-person storm shelter. Procedures for senior center meetings were discussed. Meetings are held twice monthly, with meals provided by the City during one session.

Council members expressed their appreciation for continued economic growth and ongoing community improvements as multiple projects near completion.

The next Good Hope City Council meeting will take place on Monday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Good Hope City Hall.
