CULLMAN, Ala. – A man from Arab has been charged with trafficking fentanyl in Cullman County. Shelton Ramey, 50, was arrested Feb. 9, according to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

CCSO deputies were attempting to locate a wanted subject in the area of County Road 1605 that day. Sheriff Matt Gentry said they encountered Ramey, who was found to have an active warrant for his arrest.

“During his arrest, deputies located a small bottle in Ramey’s pocket containing a suspicious liquid,” Gentry said. â€śWith assistance from investigators, the substance was tested and determined to be fentanyl, weighing approximately 17 grams.”

Ramey was transported to the Cullman County Detention Center. In addition to his FTA warrant for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, he is charged with trafficking illegal drugs.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker advised that a trafficking charge involving that amount of fentanyl carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison under Alabama law, if the person is convicted.

“I am proud of our deputies and their proactive efforts,” Gentry said. “They are making record drug arrests, and many of these cases involve the most dangerous substances we face today, including fentanyl, like in this case. Their work is about protecting the people of Cullman County from drugs that can take lives in an instant.”
