CULLMAN, Ala. – Alabama Extension will host a trapping workshop, titled “Wildlife Enhancement through Predator Control” on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The five-hour program will run from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Camp Meadowbrook in Cullman. The program is designed for landowners and land managers interested in enhancing white-tailed deer and wild turkey populations through informed habitat management and predator control practices.
Dr. Kira Sims, director of the Cullman County Extension Office, said the workshop mixes classroom instruction with hands-on learning. “This event is geared toward landowners and land managers who would like to learn more about the ecology and biology of wildlife found in north Alabama,” Sims said. “Effective trapping equipment and techniques will be presented through both indoor talks and outdoor demonstrations.” Topics will include deer, turkey and predator ecology, predator impact on a given area, as well as a deep dive into effective and practical trapping methods and equipment to help improve overall game numbers on their land. Norm Haley, Alabama Extension natural resources agent, will assist with presenting the trapping-focused portions of the workshop, with additional guest instruction expected. “This is a great opportunity for landowners and wildlife managers who want to learn more about assessing predator impacts and using trapping techniques to control predators, with the end goal of improving game populations and hunting quality,” Sims said. Registration is $25 per person and advance registration is required. The fee includes workshop materials and lunch. Seating is limited and participants are encouraged to register online at www.aces.edu/go/5730. For additional information, contact the Cullman County Extension Office at 256-737-9386.
